Since its release, the Microsoft Surface has been out at numerous conventions displaying it’s capabilities for both individual consumer and commercial use. Recently, the Surface was spotted at a convention in the UK. After getting an in depth look at the Surface writer Daniel Sung realized that the Surface is actually a lot simpler than many would expect. The entire system is contained in a coffee table sized box hand has a 1 inch this glazed sheet of glass that acts as the table top. The center of the glass acts as a 30 inch screen and has is lit up by a DLP projector that is contained with in the base of the system. The Surface also uses IR cameras to record when a person or persons are touching the screen. The computer that is the brains of the Surface correlates the images from the IR camera with the images being displayed and moves the items on the screen accordingly. While the consumer applications are limited right now, Microsoft is focusing their promotion towards commercial use. The Surface has already found its way into several hotels, car dealerships, and even the Tesco Wine Club, where club members can place their membership card onto the surface and get additional information about what ever drink they are sampling. They can also write reviews for the club and even download their selections onto their home’s PC and order their bubbly from there.
