Microsoft Surface Plays Custom Beats at CES 09

This past weekend at CES many brand new technologies were introduced, but device that didn’t get a whole lot of news was the Microsoft Surface. However, the device did manage to find itself Morning Joe podcast from MSNbc. What is cool about this demonstration is that it is one of the first times the Surface is displaying an audio program instead of a visual one. The Surface is a coffee table sized screen that has displays projected onto it by a projector built into the base. Also in the base is an IR camera that records when someone touches the screen or drops specific tokens onto the screen. The images captured from the IR camera are given to the Surface’s computer which relates the photos to the displayed image and then adjusts the display accordingly. The audio program being displayed involved an image of an old record that had the MSNbc logo on it. Surrounding the record were icons that represented a specific instrument and beat. By scrolling the icons onto the record, the Surface would play music depending on what icons were moved. The display also featured several faces from MSNbc’s major shows and by clicking on them you can hear the person say their famous lines.
