Microsoft Surface SecondLight System in Action

YouTube Preview Image

Last week you may have read about the new technologies that were being developed for the Microsoft Surface. One of them is called the SecondLight system. This system allows a second image to be displayed on the surface when a transparent object, like a piece of tracing paper, a clear scroll, or a plastic disk, is placed on the Surface. The system requires two projectors that are located under the Surface’s display. While the first projector shows the first, or primary, image, the second projector shines the second image through the screen by rapidly flashing it like a strobe light. The flashes are so fast that they can not by seen by the naked eye. The screen for the surface is designed to defuse only the primary images. In order to see the second image a second screen must be used to defuse the light and make the image visible. One of the best parts of the SecondLight system is that the second screen does not need to be touching the Surface in order to display the other image. In the video the presenters holds a piece of tracing paper several inches above the screen and you can see what the second image is with no trouble.
