It’s amazing how advanced the movie theaters today have become. A hundred years ago movie theaters were displaying black and white movies with no sound and a piano playing background music. Nowadays we have gigantic full color screens with surround sound systems that could rock you right out of your chair. The Fraunhofer FIRST is taking movie theaters into the future with its surround picture design. This design not only has a screen in front of you but the walls, and even the ceiling becomes the screen, creating a 360 degree viewing environment that could rival IMAX theaters. The system used for this experience uses two projectors to display images, although many more could be used for bigger theaters. The system can also being downsized for personal home theaters. The projectors used for this system are controlled via networking software. The network generates a virtual model of the screen and maps out where each projector will be displaying. It then transmits the corresponding images to each projector creating a seamless image. The FIRST system can also have multiple projectors added to the system to help increase the resolution of the overall image. The Frauhofer FIRST will be on display at the IBC show, September 12-16.
