Dubai Cinema Gets First Digital Theaters in Middle East

Dubai has just recently stepped into the digital era. The Middle East’s first digital cinemas have opened earlier this week. The new Grand Cinema’s Grand Festival Complex will now have two screens that will show movies with digital projectors. Normal film projectors used to have reels of film that an operator would have to change several times for one movie. The new digital projectors use a hard drive that contains the movie on it. Because sex scenes are censored in the region, the film studios are being forced to hand over their source codes to the theater so they can edit the movies. The problem that the film studios are having with this arrangement is that anyone who has a source code could easily make an unlimited amount of copies of the movie. However the owners of the theater have assured the studios that the codes are in good hands and no copies will be made. The Grand Cinema’s Grand Festival Complex hopes to have all their screens turned digital as soon as possible.
