US Air Force Requested a Holodeck

afhd_a1.jpg

The US Air Force is starting to request technology you could only find in Sci-Fi movies and novels. Recently in a request for proposals, the Air Force asked for a full Multiplex Holographic Display, AKA a Holodeck. The main feature they are wanting with the holodeck is to be able to view 3D images with the naked eye. They also requested that this holodeck be fully interactive and that it can be controlled wile in the 3D environment. The Air Force has stated that previous 3D systems have provided inadequate user interfaces, are far to dim, and can cause nausea in most users. They want to have 70-giga hologram pixels for every 30-degree field of view, which would give the holodeck the highest resolution in the world. The reason behind this request is so generals, and other high ranking officers can receive tactical advantages by having a 3D display of airspace, terain/building structures, and complex battlespace data. Unfortunately, the technology that the Air Force is requesting is not yet available. However there is hope that in a few years the holodeck will be a reality. A good example is the CAVEman project that is being developed for the medical profession.
