Big Screen Video Games Brings Teens to Libraries

Libraries are looking for new ways to bring people out of their homes. The Columbus Metropolitan Library plans to use video games. The library has spent over $40,000 on video game equipment including, game systems, games, audio equipment, TVs, and big screen projector equipment, in order to have a place for kids of all ages to enjoy a safe relaxing time away from home. The Northern Lights Library turns this concept into a show. They let the teenagers flip through books while they wait. Then they dim the lights and turn on their three TVs and movie style projector and let the kids have their fun. Many libraries worldwide are trying this new approach to bring more kids to their libraries. The American Library Association plans to study how video games affect literacy and problem-solving skills. Unfortunately, about 1 of every 10 patrons is not happy with this idea saying, “Reading and Entertainment seem to be at odds with each other,” said Kevin King, a father of three children in Upper Arlington. “We struggle with the kids wanting more and more game time at home. If they’re at the library, that’s another distraction.” However, library patrons and staff think that this new concept is a wonderful idea for kids. Julie Scordato, a teen-services specialist for the Columbus Library said, “Gaming is storytelling for teenagers. You get to mingle, play and talk, and you get to really know them. Then when you suggest a book, they listen.”
