Does HDMI Suck? An Analysis

Who could ever blame HDMI cables for connectivity problems? They are supposed to be the answer to all of our problems. However, according to this reviewer “HDMI connections are a royal pain in the backside.” Various negative aspects the reviewer brings up are that HDMI is poorly designed making the main plug a millimeter thick and a centimeter deep, which can cause problems because the plugs have trouble staying in the sockets. An example of this is the Sony VPL-VW200 projector, which is an optimum projector that actually has trouble with this same problem. During projection, the picture will be perfect, but then all of a sudden the image will disappear due to the cable connection. This is a problem with other projectors as well, even with the best 5m XHT458-500 cable from IXOS, not to mention that they break easy, the reviewer states, “I’ve done this just by leaving them hanging down out the back of, say, an upscaling DVD player, until the sheer weight of the cable pulling on the pathetically flimsy plug has caused the connection point to crack or even rip away completely from the rest of the cable.” Other problems include not carrying a signal far enough, and some cables even ‘fry’ components, according to this reviewer. After HDMI 1.2, there was an advancement to HDMI 1.3, which made some things better, especially the Deep Colour picture format, auto lip-synching technology and high-resolution multi-channel audio tracks.
