The Front Projection Dilemma Resolved

In a previous article, we talked about the projection dilemma and how the projection market was having issues when in comparison to other entertainment methods such as flat panel displays. There were various problems with this article due to that nature of the facts contained. A rebuttal to the article was just written, and the results are in; we have a winner! Lee Distad (“projector boy”) states, what about mainstream? What does it mean for something to be “mainstream,” and if we define these terms we might come to find that projectors are already considered mainstream.

For some time, front projection had been a popular choice for AV dealers and remains so to this day. The reviewer states that front projection has been a “huge product category for a demographic that you could dub “Avid DIY’ers” or that I lovingly call “AV Propellerheads.” These people are the ones who typically know a great deal about projection technology, and can even design their own cinema room. The reviewer states his argument as the following: “I would contend that if you were to survey sales results to include online dealers in addition to specialty, custom, and warehouse retailers, it would paint a picture of front projection as a mainstream category,” on the basis of three assumptions, Install-friendly Geometries, which pertain to how to install the projector; High Ambient Light Screen Technology, which deals with the screen; and of course Long-life Illumination Sources, regarding the brightness levels and components such as the lamp.

Even when the reviewer had to make the decision on projection or flat panel, usage was estimated and flat panel would indeed make the most sense. So the point of this argument is, we should continue to look at various ways front projection has hit mainstream.
