Sony to Distribute Hi-Definition Events to Movie Theaters

According to Rory Bruer, President of Sony Distribution, “Going to your favorite theater doesn’t mean just going to the movies anymore.”
Sony plans to distribute high-definition event such as concerts, sporting events, Broadway shows, and other performing arts to movie theaters that have the capabilities for digital projectors. Sony Pictures has recently formed a separate business unit called “The Hot Ticket” for this purpose, and has the first showing for this venture in August. The purpose of this business is to enable consumers and theaters to see the demand for not only digital projection technology, but to offer the general public the chance to see sold-out events on large, high definition screens at local theaters. With digital projectors, events can be distributed faster to the theaters that have the capabilities for this technology. Tickets are expected to cost $20 each, and about 5,000 of the 39,000 movie screens in the United States are digitally equipped, states the National Association of Theater owners.
