IMAX Turns Digital This Summer

Almost a billion people around the world have been spellbound by the force and beauty of The IMAX Experience.

As the summer months make their way here, we can assume that the upcoming movies will be raking in the dough, especially the long awaited film “The Dark Knight.” The various AMC and IMAX (Short for Image Maximum) theaters, ones in cities such as Baltimore and Washington, D.C. will be among the first to get Texas Instrument’s DLP-powered IMAX Digital projectors. In addition to these, around 100 AMC screens in other popular cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami will get IMAX digital installations. In addition to this, other theaters are going digital and 3-D; this is due to the advances being made in the industry with regard to stereoscopic technology. IMAX theaters in the current age, use film, and some are extremely heavy, with printing costing as much as $22,000, when a normal 35mm print costs around $1,000.

A standard IMAX screen is 22 m wide and 16.1 m high (72.6 ft x 52.8 ft), and can be larger. In March 2007, there were 280 IMAX theatres in 38 countries, and due to the recent increase in digital projection technology, these numbers are increasing. The biggest IMAX theater is in the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. The world’s largest IMAX 3D cinema screen is located in Sydney, Australia.
