IMAX to Increase Number of Theaters with Digital Projection Technology

IMAX, an entertainment company that is famous for large projection screens and theaters, recently started construction that will be aimed at increasing the number of IMAX theaters in North America by around 80% by the end of 2009. In addition to this aim, digital projectors will be introduced to these theaters in July, making an effort to also introduce 3-D technology so that the demand for this entertainment may be met by the industry. According to AMC chief executive Peter Brown, “We’d like to have it be that you could come in to one of our (multiplexes) and have a variety of experiences at all sorts of different price points.” This initiative is also apart of the need to convert to digital projection in order to keep up with the competition. IMAX screens need specific projectors due to the fact that the bulbs and tiny mirrors, along with other mechanisms used in some digital projectors are not able to generate enough light to completely illuminate the IMAX screens.
