Stripe Projection Technology 3D Sensor

Today, Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision (Fraunhofer IOF) introduced a sensor that uses projection technology to produce a 3D image, it’s called the Kolibri Cordless. According to Gunther Notni, PhD., department head of IOF states, “The two cameras provide a three-dimensional view, rather like two eyes. The projector casts a pattern of stripes on the objects. The geometry of the measured object can be deduced from the deformation of the stripes.” While this type of technology has been around for some time, it is now being put to use because of its capabilities. This device is also light weight, according to Notni, “The reason it can be so much smaller is because of the projector…”, which makes it capable of mobile usages for police officers, or in medicine. The mobility also allows the device to be used in space such as foot pedals inside a car and similar areas.
